Between me, my typewriter, and some really wonderful people, I’ve had over 400 people ‘give me a word’, which I’ve turned into on-the-spot, personalised poems they can take home with them.

One of my favourite parts of live poetry is the meaningful conversation with each guest. Before writing, I always take a moment to meet them where they are. Having a moment with each person to really engage with their story is the key to ensuring the poem meaningfully reflects them.

My setup is simple: me, my typewriter, a basket of handmade paper. I also have a little 'give me word, get a poem' sign to get people talking! I write in the moment, so people can watch and wait while I type, or head off to mingle and come back to collect. 

Each poem is written and typed in real time on my typewriter, and packaged in a compostable sleeve. When I can, I like to read the poems to the guest before handing them over - I always find that extra detail touches people and allows them to really connect with the moment.
