Demelza is a Birmingham-based typewriter poet for hire.

With her typewriter, handmade paper and a simple invitation to ‘give me a word’, she turns conversations with guests into one-of-a-kind poems they can take home.

A conversation with a stranger. A few minutes tapping typewriter keys. A poem to treasure. 

Between 2020 and 2026, over 400 people have given me a word — and I've turned each one into an on-the-spot, personalised poem. 

The most meaningful part of live poetry is the connection. The poem is only part of the experience. Before I write for someone, I take a moment to really engage with them and their story. The conversation is the key to creating a poem that genuinely reflects them.

Because I prioritise connection, my setup is simple: me, my typewriter, a basket of handmade paper. This means the experience can stay truly personal: just you, me and the poetry. 

I also have a little 'give me a word, get a poem' sign to get people talking! Guests can stay to watch their poem come together on the typewriter, or return to the party and collect when it's ready.

Each poem is written and typed in real time. Whenever the moment allows, I read the poem to the guest before handing it over. A small gesture, but often the most meaningful part of the interaction.
